Chapter 12

Jack’s putting on weight.

Reese let him sleep on her bed, and often he liked to sleep right against her legs. But tonight he was pressed against her back…and he was really warm…and he was breathing near her ear…

That wasn’t Jack.

She jolted awake.

Oh, my God. Memories flooded back. It was Cade. He was in her bed. He was spooned up against her back, one big arm over her waist. He was muscular. Hot. Like, literally hot. She was so warm and cozy and…secure. But…Cade.

“You awake?” His voice rasped near her ear.

After a brief hesitation where she considered pretending to be asleep, she said, “Yeah.”

“How’re you feeling?”

She drew in a long breath and assessed her state of being. Blessedly, her heart rate was normal, her chest not constricted, and she didn’t feel dizzy. Just…weary. “Good.”

“Good.” He gave her a squeeze.

She did another assessment. She was still wearing her short, stretchy black dress. Cade’s legs were bare against hers. Was he naked? Sweet baby Jesus. Her pussy clenched hard at the thought and she had to resist pushing her ass back against him.

“What are you still doing here?” she whispered.

“Didn’t want to leave you when you weren’t feeling well.”

“I wasn’t sick,” she objected halfheartedly.

“I know. But you weren’t feeling well. Were you?”

“No.” She wrinkled her nose. “It’s so embarrassing.”

“Don’t be embarrassed.”

“Easy to say.”

“I know.” He shifted and readjusted their position.

“What time is it?”

“Mmm…a little after midnight.”

“Oh. I thought maybe it was morning.”

“You’ve only been asleep for a few hours.”

“Oh, God.” She spun under his arm so she was facing him. With their heads on the pillow, face-to-face, she regarded his shadowy features. The hall light was still on, the door partly open, so she could see his face. “I am so sorry.”

His mouth curved. “It’s fine, Reese. Stop apologizing.” His hand curved over her hip. “Want to tell me what was going on with you?”

“Not really.” She dropped her gaze to his strong throat. Then lower…to his bare chest. Jeez, maybe he was naked. Holy crap.

He caressed her hip in a leisurely, mesmerizing motion. That clench deep inside her tightened even more, spreading through her pelvis. She was in bed next to a big, gorgeous, possibly naked man. Her body was responding. Who wouldn’t? Cade was strong and beautiful and…and good. He was a good man. Despite his manwhore ways.

Well, she couldn’t blame all those women for wanting to be with him.

“Talk to me, Reese.”

“Uuuh…”

“What happened looked a lot like PTSD.”

She closed her eyes, her body tensing. Shit. He probably knew something about PTSD. But fuck, she hated admitting it. It felt like a weakness. Yeah, yeah, she’d been for the therapy; she understood what it was all about. She hadn’t had all the symptoms of PTSD to officially diagnose her with it, but enough that she’d struggled. Her blood heated, and her heart beat faster.

“What happened, Reese?” His voice was calm, his touch sure.

She gulped in a breath, and even though she knew it was a bad idea, she burrowed into him.
